Last week I revisited two New England schools: Bentley University and Boston College. Both schools are popular choices with my students. I visited these campuses several years ago, but I decided it was time to see them again. I’m glad I did! So much had changed: lots of new academic programs as well as new buildings.
I tour 25-30 colleges each year. Often it’s my first campus visit. But, other times it’s my second or third trip to these schools. College websites and virtual tours are wonderful introductions, but nothing can replace walking the quad and experiencing the college culture firsthand.
Why should students and their families revisit campuses?
- Considering Applying ED If a student is thinking about applying early decision, it is always a good idea to visit a campus more than once to make sure it is 100-percent your first choice school.
- Official Overnight Stay If a student is considering applying ED there is no better way to see what it is like to be a student on campus than staying in the dorms, eating in the dining hall, and sitting in on a class or two.
- Saw the School Early in your Search Often a student’s criteria for a good fit college changes during the college search. Revisiting with a more educated eye always helps.
- Interview Many schools offer interviews to prospective students beginning spring of junior year and fall of senior year
- Academic Specific Information Sessions Some schools offer targeted information sessions and tours in engineering, healthcare professions, and inter-disciplinary programs.
- Meet with Faculty Meeting with a faculty member in an academic department of interest can be highly valuable. It is a good way to learn what sets an institution apart from another similar school.
