Vanderbilt has been on my professional bucket list for a long time. You can only imagine my excitement when I learned that I was invited to be Vandy’s guest for the University Counselor Days. My visit exceeded my expectations on so many levels! Not only is the 330-acre campus gorgeous, the programs are exceptional, and the students and faculty are articulate, bright, and genuine.

Vandy is home to 6,800 undergraduates who study in at least one of the four undergrad schools within the university: Arts and Sciences, Peabody School of Education and Human Development, Blair School of Music, and Engineering. Students need not declare a major before sophomore year (that includes engineers as well). Although Vandy has a graduate business school, there is no undergraduate business program, but students can minor in business.

There is a collaborative spirit across the board at Vandy, especially among the engineering faculty and students. All engineering students must complete three, four-week modules introducing students to Vanderbilt’s eight engineering disciplines during the first semester of their freshman year. Although co-ops are not offered here, most engineering students participate in one or more internships during their undergraduate experience. Seniors must complete a capstone design project that solves a real world problem. Projects are presented and displayed on Design Day, which is the last day of class.

During the tour I was most fortunate to visit the “Wondry,” an entrepreneurship center that fosters innovation and creativity. This maker space is opened to students from all disciplines. Each semester a cohort of 40 students and faulty are selected after completing an application and pitch video. All participants must complete a pre and post launch program.

Listening to the student panel is always one of my favorite parts of counselor visits and this one was no exception. Students on the panel haled from across the country and told us that the city of Nashville offers Southern hospitality and is extremely inclusive. All of them said that the faculty is approachable and students take advantage of professors’ office hours regularly. Although Vandy has the reputation of having a robust Greek system, panel members said it was not the single driving force of the social scene. However, I think it is important to note that nearly 30-percent of men join fraternities and 50-percent of women join sororities. Outside of Greek life, there’s a lot happening on campus with performing arts ensembles, service clubs, academic clubs, Division I sports, and club athletics.

All students are required to live on campus all four years. Freshmen are assigned to one of ten residential colleges in The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons. Upperclassmen now have the option to reside in living and learning communities as well. A $600 million build project is underway to open four new upperclassmen residential colleges by 2023. Each of the residential colleges has a faculty member living in the residence. Students I talked to love the residential college system and said that it encourages close relationships with “family” dinners, porch-side intellectual chats, and house competitions such as the Commons Cup. I would be remiss if I did not mention Vandy’s hometown: the vibrant city of Nashville. Known for its country music scene there are lots of music venues, restaurants, and Honky Tonks near Broadway and the Cumberland River. If you’re lucky like me you might be able to catch a fireworks display over the river. Students interested in professional sports can watch the Predators and Titans when they’re in town.

Admissions and Financial Aid

Admission is most selective with an overall admit rate in the single digits. Auditions are required for Blair. Admissions is need blind and meets 100-percent demonstrated financial need with no loans and no cutoffs on income. Unlike many highly selective schools there are merit scholarships. To be considered for merit awards, students must apply by December 1.
