As soon as I stepped off the bus onto the Rice University campus with 40 of my college counseling colleagues, I immediately understood the appeal of this midsize research institution. The gated Houston campus, home to 3,900 undergraduates, is gorgeous with its finely manicured lawn and central quad. Student tour guides met us just beyond the grand stone archway. Once on tour it was abundantly clear that Rice students are articulate, bright and engaged both in and out of the classroom.
Did you know that Rice is a globally ranked research institution? It’s consistently among the top ten research universities in the world. Its seven schools offer over 50 majors and 23 minors. Most people are familiar with Rice’s outstanding natural sciences, engineering, and architecture (portfolio for admission is required) departments. The performing and visual arts are excellent as well, and the facilities are top notch. The Shepherd School of Music broke ground for a new music and opera building in September 2017. Students wishing to study at Shepherd must audition on campus.
Rice students take advantage of ample academic and career focused opportunities on and off campus. With 24 Fortune 500 companies in the Houston area, Arthur Anderson Cancer Center, and NASA nearby there are plentiful opportunities for internships, research and shadowing experiences for undergraduate students. Admissions told us that Rice has several standout institutes and centers on campus. The James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and Rice 360 Institute for Global Health are nationally revered. Additionally, Rice offers the Century Scholars Program: a two-year research program comes with a scholarship and stipend for qualified undergraduates. The Rice Undergraduate Scholars Program is an honors program open to juniors and seniors. Students selected for this program receive a scholarship and stipend.

The student body is nearly equal male and female, which is a bit surprising for a school with strong STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture, and Math) programs. More than 40-percent of all students hail from Texas. And, just over 10-percent are international.
Whether being a member of the Owl Marching band, belonging to an athletic team, or performing arts ensemble, students are involved. Rice athletes play division I sports. Football and baseball are big spectator sports here. Traditions are coveted at Rice. “Willy,” the statue that sits in the center of the quad depicting the University’s founder William Marsh Rice, is often the focus of school pranks, all in fun of course.
