I finally had the opportunity to tour the University of Pittsburgh campus and spend time in the city of Pittsburgh; it didn’t take me long to see why so many of my students fall in love with the school and the city. This state funded university has the academic offerings and feel of many urban private schools with a far lower price tag.

The University of Pittsburgh is located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh and is home to approximately 19,000 undergraduates. Our tour guide was an accounting major from Westchester County, NY. She told us that there’s something for everyone at the University, and after spending the day on campus I think she is right.

There are 10 undergraduate colleges and schools at Pitt with five entry-level schools: The Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, The School of Nursing, College of Business and Administration, The School of Computing and Information, and the Swanson School of Engineering.

For those undecided on their academic focus, The Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences is where they begin their studies. After completing two years with the arts and sciences core courses students can declare their major. Unlike many other big universities, students may transfer into business after beginning in arts and sciences.

Health sciences and nursing are tops at Pitt. Nursing students begin their clinical experience sophomore year. In addition to nursing, Pitt offers several other health related majors: communication science, emergency medicine, health and information management, nutrition science, rehabilitation science, and athletic training. Undergraduate health science students are able to study in cadaver labs as part of the curriculum, which on many other campuses is only available to graduate students. For those interested in healthcare and health related fields, Pitt has plentiful shadowing opportunities at several local hospitals.

Experiential opportunities are encouraged and built into the curriculum at the University of Pittsburgh. Students who complete the “Internship Guarantee Prep Program and related requirements are promised placement in at least one internship or experiential learning opportunity during their undergraduate career.” Not only do students have the opportunity to study abroad in dozens of countries across the globe, they also have the chance to study away in D.C. and Yellowstone. Computer and information majors as well as engineering students can participate in 4 ½ or 5 year co-op programs.

Campus Life

All students are guaranteed three years on-campus housing, and for those who want to live off campus there are plenty of options nearby. Besides the numerous on-campus dining options, there are also many eateries close to campus. Greek life has a small presence on campus with approximately 10-percent of all students joining fraternities and sororities. University of Pittsburgh athletes play division I sports. Clearly there is no shortage of Panther pride on campus and that’s not just on game day. Many students I saw were wearing Panther-wear with “H2P=I Love it Here“ and “Hail 2 Pitt.”

Honors College

The Honors College is selective and boasts many terrific opportunities for top-tier students. Prospective students are reviewed holistically for the 400 spots available. Students who are accepted into the College can take honors classes, live in Honors College housing, register early, attend small honors classes, and take part in honors field studies.

City of Pittsburgh

Even on a student’s budget there is no shortage of things to do in the city of Pittsburgh between the many parks, museums, professional sports teams’ games, and an unexpected foodie scene. Getting around town is easy with city buses, trains, and the “Incline” and free to students with a university I.D.

Admissions

Pitt has rolling admissions and students are encouraged to apply early. There are three ways to apply: Common Application, Coalition Application, and the Pittsburgh Application. For scholarship consideration, students must apply before December 15. All students are encouraged to complete the optional short answer questions on the application. Students interested in the Honors College need to complete all optional short answers and two additional H.C. essays. Demonstrated interest is a factor in the admissions process.
