While the temperatures hover around the freezing point, many of my students are dreaming of warmer climates, and I am too! Last time I posted summaries of my visits to Oxy and USC. This week I’ll review Chapman.

When most people hear “Chapman” they think film. And, it’s easy to see why. The facilities are impressive, and the professors and alumni are leaders in their field. The nationally recognized film program is housed in Dodge College, along with eight other media programs. Many students intern at one of the local or big name L.A. studios during the school year or school breaks. Prospective students may be happy to learn that the student, rather than the University, own creative licensing.

Prospective students should not overlook the many other outstanding programs housed in the eight other colleges within the University. Business, psychology, and the sciences are popular areas of study. Many courses and opportunities often found only at the graduate level or at much larger universities are found here. Health Science students study in the department’s cadaver lab as part of anatomy and physiology courses. The on-campus Holocaust museum is a terrific resource to students minoring in Holocaust Studies. A new Science and Technology Center is opening this spring. This state-of-the-art building will house the engineering department and an entire floor dedicated to robotics. For those who want to study education, there is a mock kindergarten classroom where all students in education utilize.

There is no shortage of school spirit on campus. Students actively participate in athletics and the arts. Chapman students compete in division III athletics, and lacrosse is the big spectator sport. The performing arts program is robust and there are many performance ensembles open to all Chapman students. There is a black box theater in the new, gorgeous performing arts center. Students can participate in one of the four theater productions or four dance performances each calendar year. Greek life has a strong presence with 30-percent of all students joining sororities and fraternities. However, our tour guide told us that Greek life does not dominate the social scene.

Nearly 6,000 Chapman undergraduate students consider the Old Towne district of Orange, California home. Lots of shops and eateries line the quaint, suburban streets. Orange is close to everything. It’s 45-minutes by bus to L.A., 20-minutes from the beach, and 2-hours from San Diego. Disney Land is just 10-minutes away. A little known fact: Chapman students provide one of the largest sources of employees at Disney Land during the school year.

Admissions

Students apply to a major and are encouraged to list their first and second choices. Not surprisingly, the most competitive college is Dodge with just a 33-percent acceptance rate overall. Screen acting is the most selective with 10-percent acceptance rate, followed by film production with just 15-percent. Some majors require a portfolio.
