Last year my husband and I took a trip to Ireland. Our itinerary was jam- packed with all the usual tourist attractions, however, we also built in free time to explore, people watch, and talk with the locals. I’m glad we did. That made the trip memorable. Along the way we heard about a local farmer who leads visitors on 6k hikes through his family’s farmland along the Cliffs of Moher. Listening to his stories and seeing the land through his eyes gave us a brand new perspective.
When I visit colleges, I set aside time to explore before or after the official tour and information session. The official tour and info session are must do’s. They showcase the campus highlights and offer important application information (not to mention give students “official credit” a.k.a. demonstrated interest for their visits). After the tour, however, I go beyond the script to identify the campus personality and what type of students may find this a good fit college.
Here are a few ways to get to know a campus better.
- Read the newspaper and bulletin boards Learn what is happening on campus and what matters to students by reading the campus newspaper and bulletin boards. Check out the ads too.
- Meet with a student If you know a student on campus arrange for a time to meet. Let them show you the campus through their eyes.
- If you want to study science check out the labs If you didn’t see the labs during the official tour check out the labs. Read the student scientific posters hanging on the walls to see what they have researched/studied.
- Check out the gym (if you didn’t see it on the tour) Do they have a separate gym area for non-varsity athletes? Are there exercise classes that interest you? What are the hours? Is it in a central location easily accessible from the dorms?
- People watch at student gathering areas Grab a snack at one of the on-campus coffee shop or at the student center. Do the students look happy? Are they sitting in groups? Are they artsy, athletic, or Greek (wearing letters)? Are they diverse?
- Eat in the dining hall Check out the food options. If you have food allergies or special dietary restrictions ask about the dining options that are right for you.
- Talk to random students If the opportunity presents itself ask students about their campus experiences. Most college students love to talk about their school.
- Attend an athletic event Before visit check the athletic schedule and see if there are tickets available. Is there a student section? Is it lively?
- Check out the college town Drive or better yet walk around the town. Is it an easy walk? If not, is there transportation to town, grocery store and pharmacy?
