Last spring I was invited to attend the Lehigh Valley Counselor Tour and had the chance to revisit five terrific colleges in the area. Since Lehigh is a very popular choice with my students, I was anxious to get back on campus to see what was new since my last visit. After the information session and tour it was easy to see why so many of my students put Lehigh on their college short lists each year.
First, here are a few facts. Lehigh is a mid-sized university located in Bethlehem, Pa. It began as an all-male institution post-Civil War, but it has been co-ed since the early 1970’s. Today it has just over 5,000 undergraduates. Less than 85 miles from Philadelphia and NYC, students often take advantage of these cities’ educational and entertainment opportunities.
Engineering boasts a long, storied history at Lehigh. Today students can choose from 12 different engineering majors. Our tour guide told us that she enrolled as an undeclared engineering student and later declared mechanical engineering as her major. Engineering students take advantage of many experiential learning opportunities on and off campus. It’s common for students to engage in research and entrepreneurial thinking.
The College of Business is popular and competitive. There are six departments: accounting, decision and technology analytics, finance, economics, management, and marketing. Business Information Systems majors and Supply Chain Management majors are preparing to respond to new challenges business are facing today. All business students are required to complete a capstone project their junior and senior years. Students propose new ideas to an outside company. The College of Business and the College of Engineering offer two cross-college programs: Integrated Business and Engineering and Computer Science and Business.
I had the chance to see the newer maker space housed in a former Bethlehem Steel building on the Mountaintop Campus. Creative Inquiry projects take a front seat here, which gives students the opportunity to partner with faculty and classmates to take “theory to practice.” Students must apply for a Google Test Project and then team up for the “Five-Minute Google Test.” Students who are selected get paid for the experience.

New to Lehigh is the College of Health. The mission of the school is to offer science classes with a focus on public health and research. This new school will connect students with the numerous healthcare institutions in the Lehigh Valley and help students learn firsthand about the importance of public health professions that are devised to save lives. Last fall Lehigh broke ground for a new Health Science and Technology Building. At the time, the building was scheduled to open in 2021. Please note that there are no plans for a medical school.
Students at Lehigh are social and love school traditions. Athletes compete in division I athletics within the Patriot League. Students and alumni alike look forward to the “Big Game” each year, when Lehigh takes on its rival the Lafayette Leopards. A fun fact – Lehigh-Lafayette football game is the most played college football rivalry in the nation. Tailgating is popular, especially for this annual football game. Greek life is robust with at least 40 percent of students joining fraternities and sororities. Fraternity houses dot the hilltop. Performing arts ensembles are popular as well.
Admissions and Financial Aid
Lehigh is a Common Application only school. Lehigh offers regular decision, early decision 1 and 2. Approximately 50-percent of the incoming class is filled during the early decision rounds. While submitting the SAT/ACT is required, subject tests are never required. Interviews are offered and highly recommended. Applications are read holistically and leadership and service are highly valued. On a side note, Lehigh plans to grow its undergraduate enrollment by 1,000 in the coming years and increase faculty by 100. Students must submit the FAFSA and CSS Profile if applying for need-based aid. Lehigh meets 100-percent full demonstrated need. Merit aid is very limited and offered to only a few highly selective students.
